However, it is related to a topic that each one of us have to deal with in all our games no matter
the sport and that is “Sportsmanship”. I have made some notes about this and have several
ideas in which I can share later but that main point in this session would be two or three-fold.
1. Define sportsmanship?
a. fair and generous behavior or treatment of others, especially in a sports contest.
2. What is sportsmanship and why is it important?
a. Good sportsmanship builds teamwork, character, and teaches respect, honor,
discipline, kindness, inclusion, resilience, perseverance, and more. The benefits
of good sportsmanship are many. When kids enjoy active play, they look forward
to sports and exercise as a chance to make new friends and develop new skills.
3. What is the GHSA stance on Sportsmanship?
4. How do we respond when we witness good and bad sportsmanship?
5. How do we address it?
6. Does this apply only to player and coaches?
Conclusion – When it happens, it matters how we respond. It really does matter how the game
is played regardless of who wins or loses. Everyone loses when the game is not played with
